What (Not) to Wear to Your Engagement Session

Ahhh that age old question, “What do I wear??” When it comes to your engagement session or smaller informal sessions (like anniversaries, family, couple – you know, the one’s not in a big white dress and tux) you’ll read a lot of differing opinions and see a lot of ideas on Pinterest which can be overwhelming. And while some of those ideas are great, I don’t believe that there’s ONE way to dress for your session. Your engagement session is about you so as long as you love what you’re wearing and feel great in it, then who cares what Pinterest and the latest trends say! There are no real rules.

So while I won’t tell you what to wear, I can give you some insight into what not to wear. Here are 5 things to avoid wearing at your engagement session:

1. LARGE LOGOS AND GRAPHICS

Avoid anything with large, noticeable logos (think the Nike logo – you can’t NOT see that swoosh) and large, intense graphics on the front of your shirt. This can draw attention away from your face in the photos. With that being said, I’m a jeans and a graphic tee everyday kind of person, so there’s a time and place to break this rule. If graphic tees

are your thing, look for a more “vintage” or “aged” graphic that’s slightly more subtle. As for patterns, smaller patterns are less distracting and will let you remain the star of the show!

2. NEON COLORS

Just don’t. I promise.

3. ANYTHING TOO TIGHT OR TOO SHORT

Or just plain uncomfortable. Here’s the thing. If you’re spending your time feeling restricted or always adjusting your straps/dress/boobs/etc., you’ll spend the time of your session worried about how you look rather than having fun! And the discomfort will show in your photos. Avoid anything that you can’t move freely in. You should be able to sit in it, jump in it, squat in, give and receive a piggy-back ride in it, etc. If you buy a new outfit for your engagement session, be sure to take it out for a test run! The last thing you want is to find out that the dress is awkwardly short at your shoot.

4. SHOES YOU CAN’T RUN IN

Okay, so I’m not going to make you run a marathon in or anything but you’ll definitely need to be able to walk a bit in your shoes, wear them comfortably for at least an hour (2 if you’re not changing your shoes) and you should be able to run for 5 seconds in them.

5. AN OUTFIT YOU’D NEVER ACTUALLY WEAR IN REAL LIFE

Your engagement session isn’t really the time to try on someone else’s style for the day. Whatever you wear, whether it’s a casual you or a more formal version of yourself, it should feel like YOU. If you’ve never ever put a hat on your head in your life, don’t wear one for your session. If you do one thing, this is it. Just be and dress like yourself!

Early fall Belle Isle, Detroit, Michigan engagement session. 5 tips for what to wear to your engagement session that make you comfortable!

Hopefully these 5 things to avoid wearing at your engagement session help steer you in the right direction. When it comes to you and your partner, I always like to think of coordinating not matching. Coordinate the colors and the vibe/season of your outfits but don’t try to match because it will come off as too planned out and disingenuous (because I doubt you match every day usually).

If you still feel totally lost, get in touch! I’m more than happy to help you find the perfect outfit 🙂
